Leadership and Effecting Change in Public Health for Machinery

Question: Discuss about theLeadership and Effecting Change in Public Health for Machinery. Answer: Introduction Effective leadership and management skills are important in providing the community with a sustainable, equitable and in efficient manner. Further for the attainment of all these purposes, all the important resources for service provision such as the human resources, financial resources, machinery and other process aspects should work together (Yukl, 2012). For any organization, it is important for the leadership to develop new ideas and the management to implement those within the system so that better service can be provided to the community (Yeung et al., 2012). In this assignment through different modules the comparison between the leadership and management and will discuss how the role of leader and manager is different for healthcare industry than any other organization. Further, interviews of two public health industry leaders will be described. Finally an assessment of the interviews will be presented and the strengths of the analysis and areas where improvements are required will be figured out. Leaders versus Managers Comparing the roles and responsibilities According to Wong Laschinger (2012), leadership is the personal trait or skill and the person who possesses the skill is known as the Leader, whereas management is an attitude or discipline and people who practice this discipline is known as the Manager. While comparing these two job roles and responsibilities, the first aspect that should be compared is leadership is associated with creating vision for the organization, whereas the managers create goals for the employees to complete the vision. Further, while taking responsibilities of the organization, leaders believe in taking risks for the broad benefit of the organization, on the other hand, managers work for control the risk (Avey, Wernsing Palanski, 2012). The third roles and responsibility of a leader is to make relationship with other leaders, associated stakeholders of the organization, and focuses on loyalty and trustworthiness for the development of organizational relationships. Whereas, the managers focuses on the crea ting processes so that process related problems and risk can be avoided while achieving vision set by the leaders (Zhu et al., 2012). Finally, leaders coach employees as they are optimistic about the people who work for the organization and believe in their potential archive success for the organization, whereas, managers knows the ability of each employee and assigns them tasks depending on their ability to perform and provides guidance to achieve the personal target of each employee. Therefore, depending on these comparison between leaders and managers depending on their roles and responsibilities, it could be determined that the difference is basically in the approach of both these professionals associated to one organization (Avey, Wernsing Palanski, 2012) How leaders and managers of healthcare facility differs from other organizations? Healthcare facilities are always difficult to lead and manage as different departments, multidisciplinary staffs, multidirectional goals, diverse diseases management processes makes it a complex workplace and organization to lead or manage (Toussaint Berry, 2013). The first difference between healthcare management and leadership skills in healthcare system is focus on transformational theory of leadership than transactional theory of leadership. This leadership skill enables the leaders to provide rationale to their vision so that the multidisciplinary professionals can be empowered to achieve the goals. Whereas, in the other organizations, most of the managers and leaders utilizes the theory of transaction, focusing on the supervision organization and group performance (Ozcan, 2014). Further, leaders or managers of other organizations focuses on including machinery in the organization so that automation can be implemented to reduce man-made errors. However, with healthcare facility , it is not possible to include machineries, as complete automation of the healthcare processes is not possible. Further managing the healthcare professionals is also difficult as each patient and their associated disease varies from another (Toussaint Berry, 2013). Therefore, for the management of such professionals managers need to follow multiple-goal strategies. Hence, in healthcare services, managers need to manage variety of services the organization deliver with complete perfection, as here the loss is associated to the life of patients. Further, in this system, the manager is answerable to people such as patients, their families, partner organizations and suppliers of drugs and other medicinal equipment (Ozcan, 2014). Leaders in public health industry Explaining the roles and responsibilities of two leaders who were interviewed Interview is a process that helps to understand the mindset of the person and serves as the case study going through which can help the assessor to understand the thought process of public health leaders while implementing visions and missions. In this assessment, Rowitzs interview guide, having 15 questions were used for the conduction of interview of two leaders of public healthcare facilities of Australia (Rowitz, 2013). The two leaders selected for the interview were CEO of royal children hospital Melbourne, Mr. John Stanway and the CEO of the Melbourne Biomedical precinct, Mr. Gareth Goodier. Both these leaders were asked the 15 questions in the Rowtizs interview guide. The roles and responsibilities of these leaders towards their workplace is to provide it with visions and missions so that each employees potential can be utilized to attain improvement. The areas Mr. Gareth cares about in associated organization are the environment, human rights of the employees and patients, ar t and culture and quality healthcare. Whereas, Mr. Stanway is an economic and industrial relations graduate and had experience of working in many healthcare facilities prior to royal children hospital Melbourne (Pless, Maak Waldman, 2012). Response summary At first the interview was conducted with Mr. John Stanway and his response to associated questions was influencing and progressive. The reason of Mr. Stanway for joining healthcare industry was to improve the state of healthcare industry within Australia. According to him, knowledge of economic skills is the primary aspect of his leadership skills that allows him to take risky steps such as including young generations reviews and feedbacks in the growth and development of processes within the system. The important responses form the interview that should be mentioned are the thought of Mr. Stanway regarding monitoring of new healthcare leaders using leadership development monitoring skills so that the lacks in the leadership skills of the new generation leaders can be fulfilled. Further, in the response of a question that needed description regarding community care in the healthcare setting, Mr. Stanway replied that due to successful implementation of cultural safety norms of nursin g council, their healthcare facility is free from communal and racial discriminations. On the other hand, while conducting interview with Mr. Gareth Goodier, it was understood that his approach towards healthcare sector did not focused on generation of revenues, but completely focused on equality and quality of healthcare in each of the individuals within the society. The reason for his joining healthcare industry was his medical background due to which he was able to serve more than 25 years and to different major healthcare system across Australia. In response to the question that asks the possibility of public-private relationship for attainment of quality healthcare, he mentioned his vision of conjugating public and healthcare systems of countries such as USA, China, UK with that of Australia so that the Melbourne Biomedical precinct can be spread in those countries. Critical discussion of their interview There are several leadership theories, application of which in the healthcare industry can lead to attain healthcare professional satisfaction as well as quality improvement of the process. These theories are transformational leadership, conflict management, collaborative leadership, shared and distributed leadership, ethical and finally functional result related healthcare leadership theory (Lian Tui, 2012). These leadership theories are the base of modern healthcare system and guidance using these leadership skills are improving the value, culture, capabilities and organizational context of the healthcare facilities. The leadership skill of Mr. Gareth Goodier was collaborative leadership where, all the employees were working together to achieve a mutual goal. However, according to Paulus, Dzindolet Kohn (2012), collaborative leadership technique is quite risky as it may raise the level of conflict and differences within the employees. This creates unrest within the healthcare sys tem, which can have negative effect on the health of patients. Secondly, the thought of Mr. Gareth Goodier of combining public and private healthcare facilities to further expand his healthcare facility explains that despite of being a leader of healthcare facility, his prime aim is to gain revenue from the organization (Lian Tui, 2012). Further the interview of Mr. Stanley determined that his leadership skill had perfect balance of transformational as well as transactional skills as by including young talented healthcare professionals in the system, it implemented change in a better way as well as due to new and fresher work force, and the burden of financial demand was decreased (Anderson, Poto?nik Zhou, 2014). Self-Assessment of Leadership Style Leadership Skills Inventory in Northouse. As per the leadership traits questionnaire described in Northouse (2015), an assessment of these two leaders leadership skill was done so that the effect of their visions on their followers can be assessed. Both of the leaders were provided with the self-assessment form, where they had to rate themselves on a scale of 10. Response of both the leaders were somewhat similar, however, in the point d dependency, Mr. Gareth Goodier rated himself 8 points or denoted himself as dependable, whereas Mr. Stanley rated himself 5 and replier with nurture answers. Further both the leaders rated themselves higher as per the human oriented skills, technical skills and process and relation oriented skills (Siewiorek et al., 2012). Analysis against Rowitzs Public Health Leadership Principles While further analyzing the leadership theories of two leaders using Rowitzs Public Health Leadership Principles the statements of healthcare facility leaders was tallied with the 14 principles of it. Both the leaders focused on the public health infrastructure and focused on strengthening the system so that each of the function can be carried out properly, hence complied with principle 1, 4 and 6 (Northouse, 2015). Further, the leaders were open to lifetime learnings and were high on self-esteem for personal as well as organizational growth, hence complies with the principle 2, 8 and 11. The leaders involved employees, patients, their families and younger generation involved in healthcare sector to provide feedback about the process and utilizes techniques such as rewards and recognition, risk taking approaches for development and responsibly use the resources for further development (Rowitz, 2013). Hence, as per the Rowitzs Public Health Leadership Principles, the leaders of both t he organizations were able to comply with several principles of this theory (Poksinska, Swartling Drotz, 2013). Identifying strengths depending on the analysis and the scope of improvement After the complete analysis of the leadership skills, and self-assessment I was able to find out my strengths as a leader and manager of healthcare institute. I rated myself on the self-assessment tool and according to the results, as a leader I was able to take risky and bigger steps for overall development of the healthcare setting (Siewiorek et al., 2012). Further, I rated myself 5 points on the scale of 10 in case of dependency that determines my honesty and open to criticism nature. Further, there is a scope of improvement in case of dependency as it is one of the most crucial step of leadership and management (Poksinska, Swartling Drotz, 2013). Conclusion Leadership and management are both important aspects for the sustainable growth and overall development of the company and its process. There are different theories for leadership in healthcare industry and depending on which, this assignment compared the roles and responsibilities of leader and manager of healthcare industries with other organizations. Further, the assignment demonstrated interviews of two leaders of healthcare industry and summarized their replies depending on the questionnaire based on the Rowitzs interview guide and conducted self-assessment to determine the compliance of the leadership skills with that of Rowitzs self-assessment principles. Pharaoh Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye

Pharaoh Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye Famed Egyptologist Zahi Hawass considers the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III, one of the final rulers of the Eighteenth Dynasty, as the greatest monarch ever reign over the Two Lands. Dubbed the Magnificent, this fourteenth-century B.C. pharaoh brought in unprecedented amounts of gold to his kingdom, built tons of epic structures, including the famed Colossi of Memnon and lots of religious buildings, and depicted his wife, Queen Tiye, in an unprecedentedly egalitarian fashion. Lets dive into the revolutionary era of Amenhotep and Tiye. Amenhotep was born to Pharaoh Thutmose IV and his wife Mutemwia. Aside from his alleged role in re-establishing the Great Sphinx as a big tourist spot, Thutmose IV wasnt that notable of a pharaoh. He did, however, do a bit of building, especially at Amuns temple in Karnak, where he explicitly identified himself with the sun god Re. More on that later!   Sadly for young Prince Amenhotep, his dad didnt live very long, dying when his kid was about twelve. Amenhotep ascended the throne as a boy king, exercising his only dated military campaign when he was about seventeen in Kush. By his mid-teens, though, Amenhotep wasnt focusing on the army, but his one true love, a woman named Tiye. Shes mentioned as the Great Royal Wife Tiye in his second regnal year - meaning they got married when he was just a kid! Tip of  the Hat to Queen Tiye Tiye was a truly remarkable woman. Her parents, Yuya and Tjuya, were non-royal officials; Daddy was a charioteer and priest called the Gods Father, while Mom was a priestess of Min. Yuya and Tjuyas fabulous tomb was uncovered in 1905, and archaeologists found lots of riches there; DNA testing performed on their mummies in recent years has proved key in identifying unidentified bodies. One of Tiyes brothers was a prominent priest named Anen, and many have suggested that the famous Eighteenth Dynasty official Ay, alleged father of Queen Nefertiti and eventual pharaoh after King Tut, was another of her siblings.   So Tiye married her husband when they were both quite young, but the most interesting item about her is the way in which she was portrayed in statuary. Amenhotep deliberately commissioned statues showing himself, the king, and Tiye as the same size, showing her importance in the royal court, which was on par with that of the   pharaoh! In a culture in which visual size was everything, bigger was better, so a big king and an equally big queen showed them as equals.   This egalitarian portrayal is pretty much unprecedented, showing Amenhoteps devotion to his wife, allowing her to wield influence comparable to his own. Tiye even takes on masculine, regal poses, showing up on her own throne as a Sphinx who crushes her enemies  and getting her own Sphinx colossus; now, shes not only equal to a king in the way shes portrayed, but shes taking on his roles! But Tiye wasnt Amenhoteps only wife - far from it! Like many pharaohs before and after him, the king took brides from foreign countries in order to form alliances. A commemorative scarab was commissioned for the marriage between the pharaoh and Kilu-Hepa, daughter of the king of Mitanni. He also wed his own daughters, as other pharaohs did, once they came of age; whether or not those marriages were consummated is up for debate. Divine Dilemmas In addition to Amenhoteps marital program, he also pursued massive construction projects throughout Egypt, which burnished his own reputation - and that of his wife! They also helped people think of him as semi-divine and created money-making opportunities for his officials. Perhaps more importantly for his son and successor, the Heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten, Amenhotep III followed in his fathers sandalprints and identified himself with the biggest gods of the Egyptian pantheon on the monuments he built.   In particular, Amenhotep placed great emphasis on sun gods in his construction, statuary, and portraiture, displaying what  Arielle Kozloff aptly called a solar bent in every aspect of his realm. He showed himself as the god of the sun at Karnak and contributed extensively to Amun-Res temple there; later in life, Amenhotep even went to far as to consider himself as a living manifestation of  all  deity, with an emphasis on the sun god Ra-Horakhty, according to W. Raymond Johnson. Although historians dubbed him the Magnificent, Amenhotep went by the moniker of the Dazzling Sun Disk. Given his fathers obsession with his connection to the solar gods, its not too far of a stretch to get to the aforementioned Akhenaten, his son by Tiye and successor, who declared that the sun disk, Aten, should be the sole deity worshipped in the Two Lands. And of course Akhenaten (who started his reign as Amenhotep IV, but later changed his name) stressed that  he, the king,  was the sole intermediary between the divine and the mortal realms. So it looks like Amenhoteps emphasis on the   godly powers of the king went to an extreme in his sons reign. But Tiye may have also set a precedent for her Nefertiti, her daughter-in-law (and possible niece, if the queen was the daughter of Tiyes putative brother Ay). In the reign of Akhenaten, Nefertiti was depicted as occupying roles of great prominence in her husbands court and in his new religious order. Perhaps Tiyes legacy of carving out a great role for the Great Royal Wife as partner to the pharaoh, rather than mere spouse, carried on to her successor. Interestingly, Nefertiti also assumed some kingly positions in art, as her mother-in-law did (she was shown smiting enemies in a typical pharaonic pose).

Interview Storytelling How to Tell a Story During Your Interview

Interview Storytelling How to Tell a Story During Your Interview â€Å"I remember the daffodils were beautiful that summer. I was young then, just starting out, full of optimism and joie de vivre†¦What? My management skills? Don’t worry, I’m getting to that part eventually.† One of the best things about the in-person (or phone) job interview is that it gives you a chance to take your sterile-looking, rigidly bulleted resume and create a more rounded narrative of yourself and your career. But it’s an area that takes a bit of skill and finesse. You don’t want to end up way out in Tangentville, but you also don’t want to seem like you can’t back up the information on your resume.Find Your NarrativeBefore the interview, it’s important to limber up by coming up with the narrative you want to express during the interview. Is it that you’re a tough leader who always wants to improve? Are you a problem solver who thrives on challenges? Once you work out what you want to achieve with your interview (and what works well with the job description), you can shape your stories and anecdotes to bolster that narrative.Storytelling isn’t just a way to package yourself, it’s also a way to pull in the interviewer and make them care more about the person and resume sitting in front of them. [via DynamicYield]What to Talk AboutAt The Muse, they recommend having six types of stories in your pocket for any interview:Solving ProblemsProblem solving is a very highly regarded skill for hiring managers. They need to know that you’ll step in and be able to handle things on your own.Talk about: You resolved a conflict between two coworkers, or between you and someone else. You came up with a solution to a crisis at the last minute. You identified an area of cost savings that helped save a budget crisis.DON’T talk about: The time you brokered a peace deal between your two fighting frat brothers, or between your mom and Aunt Susan at Thanksgiving. Unless you ma naged a peace deal in the Middle East in your spare time, stick to work-related stories.Overcoming ChallengesEveryone loves the underdog, right? And sure, it’s good to have examples of when things went well, but many interviewers want to know about how you do when things aren’t going so well. In this story, it’s important to identify the challenge, but more important to show how you conquered it successfully.Talk about: You had a difficult relationship with your boss, but came to an understanding. You found a new and more efficient process for doing something that used to take hours. You had a crazy deadline for a project- and met itDON’T talk about: How you started waking up on time after you got in trouble for constantly coming in late.Bouncing Back from MistakesYou’re not perfect. Spoiler alert†¦the interviewer knows that. The trick here is turning mistakes to your advantage. It’s important to be selective here; you want to pick some thing that wasn’t too egregious, and also something that shows real professional growth. Be sure to focus on the outcome (how you’ve pivoted and this mistake made you stronger) over the mistake itself. For this one, you not only have to be a storyteller, but also a spinmaster. It’s important to show that you’re a better and stronger employee for the experience, which of course wouldn’t be repeated in your new job.Talk about: A mistake you made early in your career that made you better at your job. A knowledge gap that you worked hard to address.DON’T talk about: The time you almost got fired for negligence. A major mistake you made for which you never got caught. The time you hit reply-all to make a snarky comment about someone on the email chain, even though you meant to forward it to your friend Jake only. Or the confidential company information that somehow got made public via your Twitter account.Making Good DecisionsThis is not the time for an elaborate story that ends with your colleagues carrying you out of the conference room on their shoulders, chanting your name. Look for stories that show how you took charge of a situation, or managed others to a successful outcome.Talk about: The team you led to a successful year of sales. The event you organized (and went well). The project you spearheaded.DON’T talk about: Successful initiatives where you weren’t actually the person in charge. It’s a dangerous game, taking credit for things. You never know who knows whom, and what can be factchecked as soon as you leave the interview.Working Well with OthersYou don’t have to be the shining leader here, it’s more about how you interact. This one is pretty flexible- any kind of project you’ve done in conjunction with other people will do. Colleagues, clients, volunteers, all are potential teamwork stories.Talk about: The event you organized in conjunction with others. The high-profil e project that involved several different departments.DON’T talk about: Times you didn’t get along with others, or had conflicts.Being, You Know, a Real PersonSometimes you get a bit of a wildcard, an interviewer saying, â€Å"So tell me about yourself.† Rather than launch into a chronological timeline of your education and experience, pick a story or two that expresses your priorities and values. It doesn’t have to be strictly related to work, but if you can use it to shore up one of the big skills (leadership, problem solving, commitment, etc.), all the better.Talk about: You’re training for a marathon. You speak three languages and are working on a fourth. On weekends, you volunteer at a farm for rescued mongooses.DON’T talk about: Inappropriate personal stories. Health issues. Political activities. How to Frame Your StoriesGood interview stories do two things:1. They tell the interviewer something about you that goes beyond your resume bu llet points.2. They engage the interviewer. It’s the same as any story you tell, whether you’re hanging out at a cafà © with friends or in a job interview: you want to tell it in the best, most entertaining way. This does not mean you need to adopt a Catskills comedian persona (â€Å"take my boss†¦please!†), but it’s worth the effort to put a little sparkle on your stories, even if they’re just meant to flesh out the bullet points on your resume.Make the listener care about what you’re saying.Try to tie things back to the job at hand. If you’re talking about leadership skills, talk about how your past leadership makes you a great fit for this job managing three employees. Show the value of these stories to the company that might hire you.Stick to the important points. These stories should be short (maybe only a few sentences). You want to make sure you zero in on the most important details: who, what, when, where, and how it appli es to this new job.Be upbeat.People respond to tone, and if you try to keep the story light and professional, it helps maintain that tone for the overall interview.Make sure there’s a clear ending. You don’t want to trail off, or wrap up with a weak, â€Å"So†¦yeah.† End on a strong note about your goals or what you hope to achieve in this new job.Keep it as short as possible. Here, the sweet spot is somewhere between one-or-two word answers and a ten-minute monologue. Try out some standard answers to interview questions as part of your pre-interview prep. Time yourself†¦if you feel like you’ve been talking for a while without coming up for air, you probably have. If you find that your story is going more than a minute or two, start thinking of spots where you can cut it down. What Not to DoWhen thinking about the stories you want to tell in an interview, the things not to do are just as important as the story itself.Don’t use a timeline.Thi s happened, and then this happened, and then this other thing happened.† I’m already asleep, can you repeat that last event? Instead, try a pattern of â€Å"this happened, and this was the result. What I learned from this was†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Don’t use jargon.Try to keep terms as universal as possible. If you’re talking to someone whom you know is familiar with them, or they’re culturally appropriate to your industry, it’s okay to use specific words, but don’t take for granted that everyone will know what a GMU report is if they haven’t mentioned it before.Don’t make stuff up.The truth is always the best in a job interview scenario. Even if it would make for a better story if you accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at the end, it’s not worth the embarrassment of getting caught in a fib.Don’t leave the professional zone.Even if you’re asked to talk about hobbies or personal interests, don’t use that as an excuse to list all of your pet topics. Pick one or two that you can talk about, and for goodness’s sake, make sure they’re work appropriate. (Any story where your friend had to bail you out- not great.)Moral of the StoryAt the end of the interview, you want to feel like you’ve achieved a good balance between the you-on-paper (your resume) and your presentation. Using stories and anecdotes to show (not tell) how those bullet points and skill actually shape your career is a great skill to have, and just takes a little practice.

ART - Essay Example In representing gods too, this war like nature of the gods is clearly stressed. Later in Byzantium the religion was turned to be Christian and so the portrayal of Christ can be seen more in this Byzantine (Roman) culture. Both the ancient and the Roman religious system were based on the hierarchical order. In the Roman culture the greatest god was Jupiter, and Juno was the majestic queen of heaven. In ancient Greek culture Zeus and Hera are the supreme gods. The political rivalry between the Titans and the Olympians is very common in Greek mythology. In Roman mythology the gods were at first ‘rumina,’ formless and divine manifestations, but later under Greek influence, they too got human form. In Roman culture as their gods are not appearing before people the interpreters of gods came forth. Romans give much importance to omens and portents. In Greek and roman cultures many similarities can be seen as these cultures are closely related to one another. At first the Romans too were under the Greek dominance, and so many attributes of Greek culture can be seen in Roman culture. In finding the major difference between these two cultures is that the Byzantine culture is an off shoot of the Greek culture. Greek culture is more deeply knit than the Byzantine. In the later period Roman culture was easily to come out from the cultural bondage and embraced Christianity.
